Gradstravaganza: Graduate Student Welcome 2025

Gradstravaganza 2025 has concluded! All new and continuing George Mason graduate students were invited to George Mason’s annual graduate student welcome event. This multi-day celebration included a fully virtual line-up of Success Sessions spanning six evenings across two weeks, followed by an in-person picnic on Saturday, September 6 on Wilkins Plaza. Brought to you by Graduate Student Life, the Graduate Division, the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GAPSA)Mason Recreation, Office of International Programs and Services, UL Regional Campuses (Mason Square and SciTech), Student Involvement and University Life.

The Success Sessions took place Tuesday, August 12 through Thursday, August 14 and Tuesday, August 19 through Thursday, August 21 in the evenings. These workshops highlighted strategies for success in graduate school.

The Picnic on Saturday, September 6 featured FREE food, t-shirts, games, crafts, giveaways, and plenty of activities for the George Mason graduate community to enjoy. Students had opportunities to connect with academic units, campus resources, and graduate student organizations. Families were welcome!

Tuesday, August 12, 2025 - 5:30-7:30pm

Pathway through the PhD, 5:30-6:40pm

Presenter: Dr. Julie Owen, Associate Professor of Leadership Studies in the School of Integrative Studies, and Dr. Julie Choe Kim, Director of Graduate Student Life

This session provided an overview of what to expect during a doctoral program. While specific requirements vary by graduate program, presenters discussed key milestones commonly encountered throughout doctoral study and highlighted campus resources designed to support graduate students throughout their academic journey.

Strategies for Success in Your Master's Degree Program, 5:30-6:40pm

Presenter: Jill V. Deering, Senior Assistant Dean for Student and Academic Affairs at the Schar School of Policy and Government

This session explored what students can expect during a master’s program at George Mason. Presenters shared strategies for making the most of the master’s degree experience, with guidance relevant to both part-time and full-time students.

Life in Fairfax: Housing, Transportation, and Life Hacks, 6:45-7:30pm

Presenter: Student Panel

This session served as a guide to navigating life as a graduate student in Fairfax. Presenters shared information on housing options both on and off campus, transportation resources such as shuttles and Metro access, and practical tips for saving money, discovering local spots, and adjusting to a new environment. The session was designed to support students relocating from nearby or from abroad as they settled into life at George Mason.

Academic Productivity & Time Management, 5:30-6:30pm

Presenter: Vicki Dominick, MSEd, Associate Director, Learning Services

This session addressed the multiple academic and personal demands graduate students manage, including coursework, work, family, and wellness. Presenters shared proven productivity techniques and effective approaches to planning and managing academic responsibilities through intentional, goal-oriented use of time.

Resilience in Graduate School: Strategies to Support Your Thriving, 6:30-7:30pm

Presenter: Alexander Harrison, LPC, Associate Director, Clinical Services, Counseling and Psychological Services 

This workshop addressed the challenges of balancing graduate school with personal life and introduced evidence-based strategies for building resilience. Participants learned practical skills to help manage stress and support well-being both academically and personally.

Thursday, August 14, 2025; 5:30-7:30pm

Making the Commitment to Writing, 5:30-6:30pm

Presented by Jessie Wiggins, PhD Candidate in Writing and Rhetoric; Graduate Teaching Assistant.

This session focused on common challenges graduate students face when working on large writing projects such as papers, theses, or dissertations. Presenters discussed frequent barriers to writing and shared practical strategies for overcoming them and making progress toward writing goals

Beyond Google Scholar: Research Tools & Library Hacks, 6:30-7:30pm

Presenter: Margaret Calkins, Physical Sciences & STEM Data Librarian, Chris Magee, Social Sciences Librarian, University Libraries.

This session introduced essential research tools, resources, and services available to George Mason graduate students. Attendees learned how to identify, access, and search scholarly databases; navigate subject guides; and connect with subject librarians for research support. The session also highlighted University Dissertation & Thesis Services (UDTS), poster printing and data analysis support, Patriot Virtual Computing & Labs (PVCL), reservable study rooms, and other academic resources designed to support graduate research success.

Tuesday, August 19, 2025; 5:30-7:30pm

LinkedIn & Personal Branding for Graduate Students, 5:30-6:30pm

Presenter: Carolyn Kleiman, Career Advisor, University Career Services

This session focused on helping incoming graduate students build a strong online presence through LinkedIn and personal branding. Presenters shared guidance on crafting a compelling LinkedIn profile, developing a clear professional narrative, and using LinkedIn strategically to support academic and career goals. The session was designed for graduate students across disciplines seeking to strengthen their professional visibility in a competitive market.

Building Your Network Now for Your Job Search Later, 6:30-7:30pm

Presenter: Kristin Leonato, Associate Director, Programs and Outreach, University Career Services

This session highlighted the importance of networking during graduate school and explored strategies for building and expanding professional connections at Mason. Presenters shared tips to help students strengthen their networks and make the most of the relationships formed throughout their graduate experience.

Wednesday, August 20, 2025; 5:30-7:45pm

Access and Inclusion for Disabled and Neurodivergent Students, 5:30-6:45pm

Presenter: Jamilah Anderson, Associate Director, Disability Services, and Morgan Thompson, Analyst for Education and Strategic Initiatives, Disability Services

This session centered on fostering accessible and inclusive experiences for disabled and neurodivergent graduate students. Presenters discussed campus resources available to support disabled and neurodivergent students and shared strategies that promote student engagement and contribute to a more inclusive and thriving graduate community.

Imposter Syndrome & the Inner Critic, 6:45-7:45pm

Presenters: Phil Eiseman, Licensed Clinical Psychologist Clinician, Inclusive Community Building 

This session explored the common but often unspoken experience of imposter syndrome, including persistent feelings of self-doubt and fear of being perceived as a fraud. Presenters discussed strategies for recognizing and quieting the inner critic, reframing negative self-talk, and developing a healthier, more compassionate mindset.

Thursday, August 21, 2025; 5:30-7:30pm

Finding External Funding While in Graduate School, 5:30-6:30pm

Presenters: Dr. Megan Bruening, Director of the Office of Fellowships

This session provided an overview of funding opportunities and support available to Mason graduate students. Presenters discussed how to identify external funding sources, including government agencies, foundations, and professional associations, and shared information about advising and support services offered through the Office of Fellowships to assist students pursuing funding for research, training, and professional development.

Navigating On-Campus Student Employment as a Graduate Student, 6:30-7:30pm

Presenter: Kaylie Wray, On-Campus Employment Specialist, University Career Services

This session addressed the process of finding on-campus employment and the range of opportunities available to graduate students at George Mason. University Career Services reviewed different types of on-campus positions, including graduate assistantships and student wage roles, along with job application best practices such as resumes, cover letters, and interviewing. The session also covered how to use Handshake effectively and how to assess fit for on-campus positions, helping students identify next steps in their job search for financial support, professional growth, and community engagement.

Gradstravaganza Picnic

Saturday, September 6, 2025- 12:00-3:00pm on Wilkins Plaza, Fairfax Campus

The Gradstravaganza Picnic was held on Saturday, September 6, 2025 from 12:00–3:00 p.m. on Wilkins Plaza at the Fairfax Campus. Due to weather contingencies, the designated rain location was the Johnson Center Ground Floor, with check-in at the Dewberry Lobby.

The picnic featured free food, t-shirts, games, crafts, giveaways, campus tours, and a wide variety of activities, creating an engaging and welcoming experience for new and continuing graduate and professional students. Attendees also had opportunities to connect with academic units, campus resources, and graduate student organizations. Families were welcome to attend.

Upon arrival, guests checked in at the Graduate Student Life tent using their Mason360 ticket QR code via the Mason360 app. All non-Mason guests (adults and children) remained accompanied by their Mason graduate student host.

Please note: All food, giveaways, and graduate student t-shirts were available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies lasted. While food, activities, and general giveaways were open to all picnic guests, t-shirts were reserved for Mason graduate and professional students only.

Menu

The picnic buffet included pulled smoky chipotle BBQ chicken with buns, BBQ-seasoned tofu and grilled portabella mushrooms (vegan, gluten-avoiding), macaroni pasta salad (vegetarian), BBQ slaw, and baked beans (vegan, gluten-avoiding). Guests also enjoyed cookies (including gluten-friendly options), lemonade, water, and soda.

Parking

Students with a George Mason parking permit for the Fairfax Campus parked in their assigned lot or garage. Students with Mason Square or SciTech permits were permitted to park in General Parking areas on the Fairfax Campus.

Guests without a parking permit were able to register for free weekend parking in Lot K through the Parking Portal using the $0.00 Weekend Permit option for the event date. Paid parking was also available at the Mason Pond Parking Deck.

Mason ID

Attendees were encouraged to obtain their Mason ID—George Mason University’s official ID card—either as a physical card or through the Mason Mobile ID. Information was available through the Mason Card Office.

Inclement Weather

In advance of the event, a weather-related location decision was scheduled to be made on Friday, September 5. Any updates were communicated via this webpage, @MasonGradLife on Instagram, and email to registered participants through Mason360.
